Cornerstone guide
Sibling VPN brands
Half the internet’s “NordVPN vs Surfshark” content reads like a title fight. Since early 2022 they’ve shared a holding company. That doesn’t make either product fake — it does make naive “independent rivals” charts a little silly.
Affiliate disclosure: Hexento currently has live partner relationships with NordVPN and Surfshark (among others). This page is not a crown ceremony for either brand. See disclosure · methodology.
The gotcha
Two logos on a comparison table can still be one corporate family. If your entire shortlist is siblings plus a third brand owned by a roll-up with a messy past, you don’t have a diverse trust portfolio — you have a marketing aisle.
What we mean by “siblings” here
- NordVPN and Surfshark — consumer VPN brands under the same holding structure (Cyberspace B.V. era combination announced 2022; Nord Security / Kape-era coverage varies by article — verify current org charts when it matters to you). Product teams and apps still differ; ownership does not.
- Incogni — data-removal product in the Surfshark orbit (same broader family tree in public materials). Cross-selling “privacy bundles” is a business strategy, not proof each SKU is best in class.
- ExpressVPN and the Kape story — Express is widely reported as part of Kape Technologies; Kape’s pre-VPN corporate history (including the Crossrider era) is documented and long-discussed in security circles. Again: not an automatic disqualify — a reason to read audits and incentives with eyes open.
This is not a live ranking and not a call to boycott. It’s trust literacy: know when “vs” content is really “house brand A vs house brand B.”
What ownership does not decide
- Your seat math Unlimited devices vs a hard cap still matters on the couch. Siblings can differ here on purpose.
- Protocol and client quality on your OS A brand can share a parent and still ship a worse kill-switch on the laptop you own. Test the job.
- Whether you need a VPN at all Ownership drama is irrelevant if you should skip the category.
- Year-two price Siblings can run different promo/renew ladders. Always do the renewal math per SKU.
What ownership should change in your head
- Diversity theater: “I shortlisted five brands” means less if three share incentives.
- Review incentives: mega-affiliate charts love high-payout families. Our methodology exists so commission can’t silently crown a global #1.
- Bundle skepticism: VPN + pass + removal from one family can be convenient and still be three renewals you don’t need.
- Audit reading: prefer public, recent, relevant audits over brand vibe. Siblings may audit on different schedules and scopes.
- Jurisdiction and legal process: parent geography and entity design affect who can be compelled; “no logs” is an operational claim under pressure, not a personality trait.
How to pick anyway (without the chart cosplay)
- Name the primary job in one sentence.
- Set hard limits: seats, budget including renew, countries you refuse to trust, must-have OS features.
- Put at least one non-sibling, non-roll-up option on the napkin if trust diversity matters to you (flat-rate / different corporate culture examples exist — Mullvad is the usual teaching case, not a universal winner).
- Run true-cost and/or Pickguard.
- Verify inside the refund window. Cancel calendars beat hope.
Skip the sibling-vs-sibling rabbit hole if…
- You don’t have a VPN job yet — ownership trivia won’t create one.
- You’re choosing based on YouTuber sponsor rotation alone.
- You already know you’ll disable the app after the travel week ends — buy short, not tribal.
- Your real gap is passwords/2FA — see stack order.
FAQ
So should I avoid Nord and Surfshark?
Not automatically. They may still fit seats, price (on intro), streaming jobs, or UX. Just don’t treat “I picked the other sibling” as diversification.
Does Hexento prefer them because of affiliate status?
We disclose live partners and keep no-fit outcomes. If a non-partner fits better on constraints, that’s the answer we want on the page. Commission is a funding model, not a rubric weight — full rules in methodology.
Are audits meaningless under one parent?
No. Audits can still be real and useful. Read scope, date, and what’s actually attested. Don’t outsource trust to a logo row.
What about HideMy.Name / smaller brands?
Different failure modes: sometimes sharper price or anti-censorship history, sometimes no audits, tiny networks, weak streaming. Smaller ≠ purer. Judge on evidence — the VPN hub is built for that, not for underdog romance.
